Ten minutes of walking after a meal will not replace a workout — and it is not meant to. Its value is different: it fits into the day you already have, and it asks for no kit and no trip to a gym.
After eating, blood glucose rises. That is normal and expected. A calm walk helps muscles take up glucose from the blood, and the heavy feeling passes faster than if you sit down or lie down straight away. Ten minutes is enough to notice the difference. Twenty is better, but starting small is easier to repeat.
In practice it looks ordinary. Walk to the end of the block and back. Get off one stop early. Circle the office building. Walk around the house while the tea brews. The pace should let you talk without gasping. On icy or very cold days, a shopping centre or a long corridor works just as well.
The main rule: do not turn the walk into one more task with a tick box. One missed day breaks nothing. What matters is not the streak, but that you come back.
A useful question for tonight. Where in my day are the ten minutes I usually spend sitting?
When a walk is not enough. If walking brings chest pain, strong dizziness or breathlessness you did not have before, stop and see a doctor. For urgent symptoms call 103 or 112.
