Winter smog in Almaty: how to protect your lungs

Still days in the heating season are no reason to panic — but a good reason to know a few simple rules.

In winter the air in Almaty changes: on still days smog settles over the city and breathing becomes harder. That is no reason to panic, but a good reason to know what to do on such days.

Start with information. Pollution levels are published by city and international services as an air quality index. Look at the number, not the colour: up to 50 is good, 51–100 is acceptable, above 150 is a day to cut time outdoors.

The practice is simple. On smoggy days move your run indoors, choose a route away from busy roads, keep windows closed during rush hours. Plan walks with children for the morning, when the air is usually cleaner. An ordinary medical mask does not protect against smog: you need a well-fitting respirator, and wearing one for hours is not advisable.

At home, a HEPA purifier in the room where you sleep helps, along with damp cleaning. And remember: in heavy smog the best walk is the one you postponed.

A useful question for tonight. Where will I check air quality before leaving the house tomorrow?

When smog is not the only cause. If everyday exertion leaves you breathless, a cough will not clear, or asthma worsens — see a doctor. For urgent symptoms call 103 or 112.
